The View – Oil on Canvas

Cornelie Wolff

This compelling oil on canvas captures a singular moment of pause, where a figure leans out from a quiet interior to absorb the world beyond the window.

This oil on canvas is structured around a stark, white casement window, which acts as a luminous frame between the subdued grey wall and the vibrant, reflected life outside. The central subject, a woman with her hair pulled up in a classic style, is draped in a gorgeous, flowing dress of deep magenta and pure white. Wolff’s signature expressive brushwork gives the fabric a palpable fluidity, suggesting light movement and luxurious folds. The flash of rich pink is a warm explosion against the surrounding cool, stone-grey tones of the interior wall.

Her gaze is directed firmly toward the outside, where the glass reflects a vibrant, abstracted landscape—a bright, hazy vision of blues, golds, and whites. This duality between the woman’s contained, focused silhouette and the unfolding, colourful world outside the pane creates a profound sense of yearning and quiet observation. The painting beautifully encapsulates the yearning to connect with the external world from a place of momentary repose.

‘The View’ is a sophisticated and emotionally resonant artwork, perfect for adding a touch of timeless feminine elegance and thoughtful narrative to any space.

Cornelie Wolff Approaching Art from a Different Angle

This Johannesburg-based artist started as a pharmacist.  After completing her Honours Degree in Psychology, she joined Helios to further her skills in Art Therapy.   During this time, she fell in love with art, the process and the emotional power it yields.

While raising her family, which consisted of three young children, she took part-time classes with Rika de Klerk and Willie Jacobs.  She also attended workshops led by Koos Bronkhorst, Niel Moss, Willie Jacobs, Rentia Coetzee, Ruth Walters, Elize Bezuidenhout, Douw van Heerden, Charla Maarschalk, and Jennifer McChristian.

Today, she practices what she preaches by creating her work under the motto: “With every painting I complete, I grow as a person and an artist.”

My art is created from a place of wonder – it is my dream for every human to never completely lose the child inside them, because it is our ability to see wonder and magic in things.  I use bold brushstrokes, contrast and an impressionistic approach to entice the viewer to create their own interpretation of the subject and become part of my world.
